Convert Fractions to Decimals

The simplest method is to use a calculator.

Just separate the top of the fraction by the bottom, and read off the answer!

Example: What is five 8 as a decimal ... ?

calculator

... get your computer and type in "5 / viii ="

The answer should exist 0.625

No Computer? Use Long Division to Decimal Places

Example: here is what long division of 5 viii looks like:

0.625
viii )five.000
0
5.0
iv.8
xx
16
40
40
0

In that case we inserted extra zeros and did v.000 viii to become 0.625

Another Method

However some other method you lot may similar is to follow these steps:

  • Stride 1: Observe a number you can multiply by the bottom of the fraction to make it x, or 100, or 1000, or any ane followed by 0s.
  • Footstep ii: Multiply both height and bottom by that number.
  • Footstep iii. Then write down just the tiptop number, putting the decimal point in the correct spot (i infinite from the right hand side for every zero in the lesser number)

Example: Convert 3 four to a Decimal

Step 1: We can multiply 4 past 25 to get 100

Step two: Multiply top and bottom by 25:

Step three: Write down 75 with the decimal point 2 spaces from the correct (because 100 has two zeros);

Respond = 0.75

Example: Catechumen 3 16 to a Decimal

Step one: We take to multiply sixteen by 625 to go 10,000

Step 2: Multiply top and bottom past 625:

Step 3: Write downwardly 1875 with the decimal bespeak 4 spaces from the right (because 10,000 has 4 zeros);

Respond = 0.1875

Instance: Convert 1 3 to a Decimal

Step 1: In that location is no style to multiply 3 to get x or 100 or any "1 followed by 0s", but we can summate an approximate decimal past choosing to multiply past, say, 333

Pace 2: Multiply top and bottom by 333:

Step three: At present, 999 is nearly 1,000, and then let united states write down 333 with the decimal signal three spaces from the right (because 1,000 has 3 zeros):

Answer = 0.333 (authentic to just 3 decimal places !!)

947, 1362, 948, 1361, 3487, 3488, 1363, 3489, 3490, 3491
